Ultimately, this is what we all want: a home filled with radiant energy – where we feel good, are nurtured and supported, sleep well and can recharge our energies.
Unfortunately, many things can get in the way of our dream home: life, budget and time pressures, location, the market… As a result, we often end up with a home that is not quite nurturing, or worse. We are busy and make do.
The Decision
Creating a nurturing home is both simple and complex.
Firstly, it starts with You. It is created from inside-out.
Just as a healthy life starts with a decision – to eat well, exercise, get enough sleep – creating a nurturing home also starts with the decision to create one.
This may sound obvious, but in reality, there are many motivations that often get in the way and that can result in pretty ordinary or even negative dwellings.
Living in this world is not easy and other motives such as ‘getting into the market’, FOMO, a focus on resale, keeping up with ‘the looks of a modern home’, etc. can get in the way. You can of course have those considerations, but they need to come second.
In order to create a nurturing home, a home that feels great and fits you like a glove – where you can be healthy, wealthy and well – you need to make the decision to create one a priority.
Once you have done this, here are some steps you can take towards a nurturing home.
The Gut Feel – Listen to Your (Higher) Self
When you look for a new home and attend openings and inspections, you will have a gut feel about each place. This may be a hunch or a sensation in your body. It may be ever so slight or loud and clear. It is your gut response to a building, the first impression, an inner knowing.
Most of our intuitions are valid and I suggest to consider these feelings. This does not mean that there won’t be any challenges with a building that feels good, but at least you are off on a positive foot. Trust your knowing.
It is nevertheless easy to go astray here, unless you’ve put your decision of creating a nurturing home first. This is because your mind will jump in next.
You check this place against your list of needs and wants: the number of rooms, storage, school zone, proximity to shops… If a place fits these requirements, it can be tempting to override your instincts and rationalise a negative first response away at this point.
I speak here from personal and from 25 years professional experience as a Feng Shui consultant. Chances are high that the building that did not feel good will be a challenge or uphill battle.
Nothing is black and white though: most buildings can be improved and be made more life supporting, but there are some that are easier and others that are harder to get right.
To hone your intuition when first stepping into a building, you can ask yourself: does this place uplift you or depress your energy? It will have an effect on you one way or another. Observe.
It may feel slightly stifling or dull, or it may feel light and happy. When people step into their home, they often know straight away. Your gut feel is the meter of whether a place will be supporting you or not.
AND, for more assurance, I provide a pre-purchase service, where I check the basics of a home, whether 1. it can receive radiant life force, and 2. that the bedrooms are healthy or can be made so. I always recommend this service.
Natural Order and Balance – making the best of your building
You know to avoid junk food, eat well and exercise if you want to be healthy.
In the same way, arranging your home in harmony with natural order will make it balanced, healthy and radiant.
How to achieve this may be less obvious as most of you have not been trained in this knowledge, but it nevertheless works just the same.
Cause and effect: If you take life supporting steps, things get better. If you take life depleting steps, things get worse.
With the tools of advanced Feng Shui, we can work out the life supporting steps in any building. We can make it as nurturing and healthy as it can be. We determine:
- where to open a window or door to let in radiant life force (that will make everything better)
- where to sit in order to be able to concentrate on your work or study,
- where to sleep so your energies are nurtured and recharged,
- how to arrange each space to give it integrity and work best for its purpose.
Adjustments can be made within one room or for a whole building. As above so below. We have many dimensions we can work with in Feng Shui. While it is advantageous to apply it in the design, there are changes you CAN make later that will improve the quality of life there. A building can always be shifted towards more life force.
To achieve this, we work out:
- what colours will bring out the best potential in each room (and what colours would make it worse), and
- what shapes and objects would enhance its positive energies.
In short, just as improving your diet and lifestyle can enhance your wellbeing, there are steps you can take for your home to support your happiness, productivity, health and wellbeing.
So, Where do you Place What?
There are no generalisations here. Recommendations regarding placement, colours and design are individual to a building. We work them out with the help of advanced Feng Shui formulas. These are based on the building’s exact orientation, building period and design, and are hence unique.
I caution against blindly adopting generalised Feng Shui cures. While these may work for a while because you are powerful and have made the decision to improve your living environment (point 1), they are not necessarily in harmony with the forces of nature and can undermine your intentions in the long run.
