Between Heaven and Earth

In Feng Shui and the Tao*, we the people are considered to stand between Heaven and Earth. This is a unique position from where we are able to shape our environment and buildings – for better or worse.

We have power and choice to create environments in harmony with nature or in conflict with it. We are, more than any other species, able to use the power of Heaven to enhance life.

Heaven, in the Tao refers to the intangible influences – life force, mind, intention, spirit…

Earth refers to the physical things – hills, body of water, trees, buildings, material things…

According to the Tao everything is created in the mind by intention before it manifests in the physical. We can create healthy living environments:

  1. by using the power of Heaven in the form of life supporting ideas, and
  2. by utilising the most positive environmental influences with Feng Shui knowledge.

In Harmony with Nature

Everything, left on its own, is naturally in balance. Nature works towards balance. It’s people that can make things more complicated. We have choice:

  • to create in harmony with and enhance life, or
  • to create imbalance and even destroy nature.

Some tangible example of working with nature is the regeneration of depleted soil through natural soil management or the land management of the Indigenous people of Australia.

Other examples are the creation sacred spaces, communities and dwellings in harmony with life.

Examples of eventual destruction of nature are over-use of soils and resources, or the application of toxic control agents and over-control of natural processes. In this vein, we also have buildings made for short-term gain rather than longterm quality of life.

Heaven on Earth

Creating Heaven on Earth in terms of the Tao, means honouring our nature and special position. That is, to use our creative power to envision and manifest more life, harmony and beauty.

As conscious creators living from love not lack, we are in a position to create abundance and balanced living environments – whatever our sphere of influence.

Heaven on Earth with Feng Shui

In Feng Shui we work on harmonising the energetic and physical forces of Heaven and Earth.

Energies from Heaven come to a building from the sky. There are eight qualitatively different energies from the various compass directions. These are the Yang energies that bring life force. They enter a building through doors and windows.

In every dwelling, there are some directions where Yang energies are powerful and can make things come to life. There are others that contribute to the stress of perpetual fight and flight modes of people operating there.

Earth Energies support us. They rise from the Earth and sit in hills, walls and solid things. These are the Yin energies that hold us and bring health and wellbeing.

In every building there are some directions where the Yin energies are super supportive. Others can have us perpetually waking tired, not rested and recharged.

Above energies can’t be seen but they can be felt. We know them by their feel. A space with harmonious Yin and Yang energies naturally feels good.

Activate positive Life Force and Health

YANG

Knowing where the most radiant life forces come from is the most important aspect of Feng Shui.

If we can bring positive Yang energy into the building, most potential problems are taken care of (just as when you are healthy, you don’t have to worry about every new virus making its round).

The direction where the most radiant life forces come from is unique to a building – and worked out with advanced Feng Shui. Once we know this, we make sure to let it in through a door, pathway or window!

YIN

Knowing where the most supportive Yin energies are located is just as important. If we sleep, rest and spend time there, you will get recharged by the Earth’s support.

The direction where the most nurturing Earth energies sit is also unique to a building. When we know where these are, we can place the beds, sofa, cosy and reading corners there.

Final Words

Ultimately, happiness comes from living in service to life – in harmony with nature and with intentions of love and light. With that, Feng Shui can be an invaluable tool to help us create a world of beauty and harmony.
