How to work with Yin energies. Yin energy is still, reflective, receptive, nurturing and sustaining.

Yin energy is what we use when we want to relax and recharge, when we sleep, chill out and just want to be. In Feng Shui, it is often referred to as the Health and Relationship energy. It gives us support, and sets the tone for positive communication and loving relationships.

Yin energy does not move around. It sits in walls, solid objects and mountains. It supports you when you are right in front of it. You are probably aware that, for support, you should sleep and sit against a solid wall, rather than an open space or window. This is true – but what about the quality of energy in the wall?

In each of the eight compass directions, walls carry a different type of Yin energy. Where each type of Yin is located, is unique to each building. It is controlled by its exact compass direction and building age.

The different types of Yin energy

In the current time period, the #8 Yin energy is the very best energy for nurturance and support. It is THE Health and THE Relationship Energy until 2024. It is gentle and lovely.

Another good Yin energy is the #9. This is more radiant and, with more of an outward focus, not quite as soft as the #8. Then there are a range of other Yin energies that can be good or bad depending how they are used – each with different qualities and flavours.

Then we have a couple of culprits we need to watch out for. You don’t want to sleep in front of a wall that carries the #2 or #5 energies! The #2 is responsible for ill health and sickness. It particularly affects the abdomen and the womb. The #5 can be responsible for all sorts of personal and familiar disasters, and has often been associated with accidents and serious illness.

The good news about negative Yin is, that as long as we don’t sit or sleep in front of the wall where it sits in, it won’t affect us, even if we are sleeping in the same room.

And the good news about positive Yin is that as long as you have a cosy corner, day bed, arm chair – or your bed in front of it, this will be the space where you can really chill out, recharge and relax.

The effect negative Yin

Here are some examples of what negative Yin can do. I have done Feng Shui assessments for over 11 years. Every time I have come across this type of energy in someone’s bedroom, it has created havoc or ill health. Here are some examples from my practice:

  • I found a little boy’s bed situated right against the #5 Yin wall (they had only just moved there). When explaining why they should move the bed to the other wall, the mother told me that the previous owner had slept there and died of cancer!
  • When discovering a single man’s bed with the #2 energy behind his bed, I told him about the sickness potential. He then told me that his ex-wife had developed severe uterine problems while living there.
  • I was called to do a consultation where the 10yo daughter was suffering with bronchitis and one cold after another. She was also sleeping against the #5 Yin. The condition completely cleared up after moving her bed onto the other wall in the room.

These examples speak for themselves. I have seen enough personal drama and sickness to make sure you won’t sleep in such influences.

On a positive note, here is an example of how to work with positive Yin energies: I have been able to place a daybed in the ‘romantic corner’ of a couple’s home – and improved their communication and rekindled their romance.

How to optimise Yin energies

Good Yin energies are located in a certain direction in your home. This is determined by its unique energy distribution. If we are lucky you can have a bed, day-bed or sofa in that direction. Sometimes a strategically placed armchair can harness this energy.

However, the most important aspect of working with Yin energies is to make sure that you do NOT sleep in front of the #2 or the #5. Whenever I have found such situations there is always some solution that will give you more nurturance and positive energy.

You are spending about 1/3 of your life in bed, so this is the most important place to harness good Yin energies. Sofas and other seats of course also benefit from it.

The important thing to know is that not all walls make good sleeping spots – and that you have to have reasonably good Yin behind the wall of your bed to be supported by Feng Shui energies.
